In hospital wards, emergency rooms and operating rooms, infusion sets are indispensable medical devices. Acting as precise “life channels”, they safely deliver vital substances such as medications, nutritional solutions and blood into patients’ bodies, providing core support for disease treatment, postoperative recovery and critical care, making them irreplaceable tools in clinical medicine.
Although the core structure of an infusion set appears simple, it incorporates sophisticated design. According to clinical needs, various types of infusion sets have been developed: disposable infusion sets prevent cross-infection and become standard equipment; precision filtration infusion sets can filter particles larger than 5 micrometers, suitable for special infusions such as chemotherapy drugs and traditional Chinese medicine injections; intravenous indwelling needle infusion sets reduce pain from repeated punctures, ideal for long-term infusion patients; there are also specialized models including pressure infusion sets for intensive care and microinfusion sets for precise drug administration.
Technological innovation continues to drive the upgrading of infusion sets. Early infusion sets relied on manual speed adjustment, which had large errors and potential safety risks. Today, intelligent infusion sets are widely used — they accurately control the flow rate through electronic control systems, and are equipped with functions such as air bubble detection, blockage alarms and liquid depletion reminders, greatly reducing infusion risks. In terms of materials, from traditional rubber and plastics to current medical-grade PVC and polyolefin materials, biocompatibility has been improved while the precipitation of harmful substances is reduced, ensuring medication safety. In addition, innovations such as needle-free infusion technology and anti-reflux design have further optimized the user experience and relieved patient discomfort.
With the upgrading of medical demand and advances in technology, the infusion set industry is developing steadily. As the world’s largest producer and consumer of infusion sets, China’s output of disposable infusion sets exceeded 12 billion sets in 2024, meeting domestic clinical needs while being exported overseas. In the future, intelligent, personalized and eco-friendly infusion sets will become the mainstream. Examples include intelligent infusion systems that can monitor patients’ vital signs in real time and portable infusion sets for home care, which will provide safer, more efficient and humanized support for clinical medicine, and continue to safeguard patients’ lives and health.
